For those of you that wondered how bad does the ending get: it’s not bad in the absolutely bullshit, plot holes everywhere,.literally unreadable etc sense, it’s just boring as hell because there’s little of what made this series so good in its early stages. But Ast’s shenanigans with the princess, however… Oh boy.

Has the light novel fixed any of the later issues? Or has it not caught up yet?

I don’t know how the light novel goes. Afaik Volume 3 is the end of the Yugrasia arc, and they only sell physical copies so I can’t get my mitts on them.
